How Publishers Can Sell Products Across All Titles

“To accomplish this, we used an open-source fulfillment system that could communicate with front-end ecommerce stores via web services. This allows the back-end system to push products to each title’s product catalog within their store. It also allows orders coming from the stores to be sent to the back-end system in real time where inventory management and fulfillment occur.” Says Jason Doyle, Director of Interactive Media for MCC Magazines.

According to Wikipedia, open source software (OSS) projects are built and maintained by a network of volunteer programmers. Prime examples of open source products are the Apache HTTP Server, the e-commerce platform osCommerce and the Internet browser Mozilla Firefox. One of the most successful open source products is the GNU/Linux operating system, an open source Unix-like operating system.

Another benefit to this approach is lower cost of ownership. Consolidating all of the product management features into one system decreases maintenance.

As all publishers today are looking for new channels of revenue, this is one step that can be taken that will guarantee new avenues of revenue by simply expanding products offerings to new audiences with related interests.
